Why The Cannabis Industry Needs To Evolve To Face Climate Change

Published

climate change in the cannabis industry

The climate crisis is an ongoing uphill battle for the whole world. In several oceans, rising sea levels lead to increased land erosions and flooding. These, of course, come from the melting polar ice caps. And this leads to endangered animals like the polar bear suffering from the loss of habitat and prey. And in addition, this terrible year saw huge areas of Australia ravaged by forest fires. Meanwhile, in California, the ongoing forest fires threaten to destroy the cannabis industry immensely.

The forest fires themselves come almost annually to the dry woodlands of California. That in itself is not unusual. However, since the past few months, the blazes have reached unprecedented levels of spread and destruction. Started by a gender-reveal party gone awry, the flames may now pose a threat to agriculture. For instance, cannabis farms seem among the most at risk.

The Way Cannabis is Grown, Adds to the Problem of Climate Damage

Cannabis is a plant that is harvested for its leaves, shoots, stems, and flowers. These contribute to the production of CBD and THC products, hemp, and oils. The key thing to note is that, in North America, cannabis harvests typically take place in October. And also, that most crops, about 66%, grow outdoors. The cultivation of cannabis, with the intention of getting an ideal yield, takes care and precision. An excess of moisture, over-watering, is just as damaging as pollution is.

Last year, excessive rain led to harvests being compromised. The increased moisture gives bacteria, fungi, and certain pests more ease to harm the crop. And this year, clouds of ash and soot from the fires threaten the crop once again. Furthermore, recent findings also indicate that current cannabis waste disposal is not environmentally friendly. This is exactly why recently several cannabis retailers, researchers, and investors came together to brainstorm new solutions.

In a recent interview, Kierton Inc. CEO Jay Evans provided his take and ideas on the issue

The interview set out to analyze how one of the cannabis industry’s leading figures intends to deal with the matter. However, it must be noted that these ideas all require collective unity. Cannabis farms, distributors, and retailers all need to set aside their differences and act upon new breakthroughs. The amount of capital required, while significant, should then, therefore, match what is saved.

Evans, himself a notable cannabis expert, admitted the current state of affairs was inadequate. Keeping crops outdoors, when suitable, protective greenhouses would fare much better, is ludicrous. Furthermore, invest in state of the art equipment to battle any hindrances, including carbon filters and leaf blowers. In addition, he mentioned the necessity of building future cannabis farms in areas that were less susceptible to natural disasters and inclement climates.

Even despite the plans to develop cutting edge tools, Evans cautioned that the number one way to avoid damage to the crops is prevention

The key takeaway from Evans’ interview was clearly his emphasis on preventive measures. Human development and science have and will bring us far. But when your biggest obstacle is Mother Nature herself, it may pay dividends to avoid hindrances. After all, it is better to build a dam on a river rather than the open sea. To this end, he advised new farms to avoid dry woodlands and wet marshes, and focus on temperate biomes.

All in all, the ideas Jay Evans and other eminent experts propose may just save the cannabis industry. Hopefully, the rest of the world too can unite and combat climate change together.

Cannabis Shown To Be Effective In Treating Depression and Anxiety

How cannabis is used to treat depression

There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep to relax the body and mind. We’ve all heard that saying, and most of us take the hours of sleep we get for granted. If we feel tired after work, we don’t really mind, because we can easily fall asleep a bit earlier, right? But imagine if you couldn’t sleep. Or if you felt so anxious at night that falling asleep terrifies you. These are real problems facing a huge number of people today, especially those with clinical depression.

Mental health disorders are responsible for worsening physical health disorders and reducing quality of life. The two most commonly faced forms are depressive disorders and anxiety disorders. Understandably, a worldwide pandemic leaving billions detached from their friends and family has made things worse. In times as uncertain as ours, there’s plenty to be depressed or anxious about too. Luckily, studies have shown that cannabis can be a powerful combatant against these two conditions, as we’ll see below.

What’s the difference between being depressed and depression?

While it is basically a normal to undergo ups and downs in life that affect your mindset, we’re not talking about just feeling sad or worried. Almost everyone experiences moments where things seem pointless or bleak. That’s part of life and while it isn’t good, it isn’t a disorder. Disorders are defined as a period of depression lasting consistently over more than six month.

Depressive disorders, commonly called depression, are among the most common ailments affecting people today. And what’s worse is that they are either caused by or cause anxiety disorders as well. Again, that’s not like anxiety from not submitting homework on time. Anxiety disorders can cause breathing problems so bad, they are sometimes confused with heart attacks.

Okay, so how common is it?

You’ve probably heard a lot about ‘mental health awareness week’ or maybe charity events for people with mental health problems, but no matter how much they talk about it on the news, it’s still not enough. Because it’s suspected that as many as one in five people worldwide are suffering from serious mental health issues right now. And at some point in life, most people experience those issues too. It’s a pandemic like COVID-19, but we don’t even know how bad it is.

Of all the people who experience these issues, only thirty six percent even get checked out. That means we don’t even know how common it is for people to be suffering from mental health problems. The situation, extremely dire as it is, needs more awareness and discussion.

Luckily, an age old remedy is making news

Since time immemorial, people have been smoking select plants for their psychoactive effects. Even monkeys like using cannabis, and it might be for a lot of the reasons we do too. Besides the pleasurable effects of the drug, in particular certain benefits need to be less overlooked: marijuana fights depressive and anxiety disorders. This is due to the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) that play psychoactive and physiological roles respectively.

Marijuana, linked, fortunately, to lowering negative thought processes in patients, saves lives. Also, it typically grants very soothing, relaxing sleep for those with insomnia issues. People who find difficulty in relaxing before bed have commonly used the drug to help rest more comfortably. And this isn’t news to us; indigenous peoples have been using cannabis for centuries. We owe a lot to these cultures, after all.

How Cannabis Is Now Being Used To Treat COVID-19

Published

on

cannabis for treating coronavirus patients

The novel coronavirus has taken hold of our lives and many live in fear of getting sick. In times where nothing is certain, there is a ray of hope beaming through the gloom. And it comes wrapped in paper for your convenience. It is cannabis, and it may just save lives.

Researchers have good evidence that leads them to believe there’s more to weed than meets the eye. In some tests, they were able to show with confidence that cannabis contains chemicals that reduce inflammation from COVID-19. We discuss the news and its highlights below.

The chemical in question is Cannabidiol Oil, or CBD Oil, as it is commonly known. Scientists at the Dental College of Georgia and the Medical Dental College of Georgia have made significant strides in proving this chemical is helpful in fighting the virus.

What is inflammation and why is it bad?

Inflammation is a medical term for one of the responses shown by the body to infection. Cutting the jargon out, this means when your body gets infected by a bacterium or virus, it can choose how to react. One of the ways cells that are right at the site of infection respond is by releasing special messenger chemicals which alert the body to the invading pathogen. This is the equivalent of raising the alarm for intruders. One bad side effect of this, though, is that sometimes, it can hurt you worse than the intruders. Inflammation causes reddening of the skin, swelling, heat and other bothersome effects.

Along with inflammation, the body has many other ways to respond to pathogens (disease causing particles). However, in the context of coronavirus and its side effects, these are not important so we will not discuss them.

What does CBD Oil do, and how does it help against coronavirus?

Cannabidiol is a compound found in most species of cannabis. Such compounds that are present in cannabis plants are usually referred to as cannabinoids. CBD Oil is unusual even among cannabinoids because it helps fight against the inflammation response of the body.

To avoid boring you with all the details suffice it to say that when you get a fever, that isn’t because of the pathogen inside you. A fever is caused by the body itself because it raises the temperature of the blood. This can kill pathogens, but it can also kill you if it goes on for too long. One way CBD Oil can help is by putting a stop on all that. It causes chemical reactions to take place that don’t allow the body to respond so drastically to the virus. Instead, the Oil moderates a better response that doesn’t hurt you as much.

What does this mean for the future of cannabis?

For now, it’s really good news. It means that cannabis has a shot at making it big in the medical industry. If medical industries push for cannabis legalization to help keep up with demand, it’s a win for everyone. Also, using cannabis in medicine hasn’t been a practice for centuries, but this new research is definitely promising.

If the research holds up on a much larger scale, it could turn the rides for those demanding better cannabis laws. For starters, if the drug can be used to treat COVID-19 patients, then it’s great for the majority of the world. Also, it will help to normalize marijuana and show that this drug isn’t what it’s made out to be. Lastly, it will help create more demand and that means better regulation for cannabis overall.

New Zealanders decide on Marijuana Legalization

Cannabis Legalization in New Zealand

New Zealand finally held a referendum on whether to legalize Cannabis in the country. The election date was the 17th of October. However, results will not be announced until the 6th of November. Those seeking answers about Marijuana legalization will have to wait until then, sadly.

Previously, the idea prevailed that cannabis products should not be under public use or “legalized”. It was because of the bad impact of the product when misused or overused.

However, with changing times and advancements, new concepts are emerging. The fact that cannabis can actually benefit our body in different ways is now recognized.

Now the people all over the world are trying to legalize the drug in their homelands. While it could be a smart move, it may also cause difficulty in managing the use of the drug.

Cannabis which is also known as marijuana is a psychoactive drug which creates a sense of ecstasy and relaxation. It creates a sense of euphoria i.e. intense happiness and self-confidence.

In this harsh routine of monotony, one might opt for external ways to feel good. Cannabis is also good for use in medical conditions as a reliever. These conditions include anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation and other neurological problems.

Apart from these benefits, other benefits include use during different kinds of body pains. New Zealand is also in the list of countries fighting for Cannabis legalization.

Recently, the state’s prime minister admitted using marijuana in her past life. After that, the campaign caught some heat and a referendum took place.

Votes are still undercounting. However, the prime minister declared victory by a large margin. But we will have to wait until the final results to find out what actually happens.

Marijuana legalization is not an easy drill. Many countries are striving for it but there are many hurdles. Strongest one being the intention of people to use it as a medicine substitute.

This journey began in 2017 by the labour party. It started when Arden took office and started a campaign. She aimed to legalize cannabis in the country. She was of the opinion that it is a healthy product when used in a controlled way.

The party in conjunction with the Green party passed a bill in the parliament. Government’s decision was organizing a referendum. If maximum voters said “yes”, then cannabis legalization can take place.

The benefits to legalizing marijuana are not just health-based. This step will affect the economy in a positive way by increasing individual productivity.

The business of marijuana farming and seed selling will grow. However, to manage a controlled use, they are introducing tax on its purchase and keeping.

There will also be an upper limit for cannabis production annually. It will require constant regulation like FDA is trying to do in the US.

However, every picture has two sides. There is a possibility that the medical department will try to oppose this new tide. It because of backlash possibilities due to people preferring cannabis over medicine.

While many doctors are of the opinion that people using cannabis products for health usage is not alarming. Some believe that it is not good because people will avoid using other beneficial medicine.

However, the final decision will obviously be based on the referendum by the public. We can just sit back and wait for Marijuana legalization until then.
